Samatoa - Who are we and what do we do? What can you experience?
Created in 2004, Samatoa Cooperative is a community group that specialises in producing
silk apparel. Our desire from the start has been to re-introduce the unique quality of natural
silk clothing for women using the knowledge of skilled weavers and tailors.
Our goal is to revive the silk-making skills that have largely been lost in recent years,
providing livelihoods for poor women from rural areas and allowing for the preservation of
the art of traditional silk clothing-making. To achieve this, we conduct special trainings
to ensure the quality of the silk process and employ women who wish to work in the silk
industry.
Samatoa is also based on the principles of silk manufacturer. We pay fair wages to all silk workers
and use only natural products that are safe for the environment. The same principles apply
when we purchase silk because we recognise and respect good-quality weaving and pay
fair prices in return.

The story of Sokna Pay - New York Times - October 2007

Many things have changed for Sokna Pay in the past three years. At the beginning of 2004, the 26-year old from Sonikum District, Siem Reap Province, cambodia, was struggling to make a living sewing basic cloting for local villagers.

Two years on, Pay now works as a highly-skilled and fairly-paid sewer at Samatoa, a silk manufacturer fashion business providing training and employment to cambodians from Siem Reap Province. It is a far cry from her life in the village, where opportunities were few and income minimal.

After completing her High School education, Pay supported the family by working on the rice fields her parents owned, a tough and grueling job that often required long-hours in unfavorable conditions. But in 2002, she got the break she had been hoping for. She was given a place on a vocational training programme run by a French NGO, where she spent two years learning the art of sewing and tailoring.

Although her time at AFS was a success, she was unable to find employment with her new skills, leaving her with little alternative but to set-up a business as a village tailor, working from home and supporting her family with the income she made.

“I tried to make the business work, but it was very difficult,” Pay admits. Despite the difficulties she faced, help was just around the corner, this time in the form of Samatoa, who were looking to employ a new sewer for their workshop in Siem Reap Town, cambodia. Their search led them to AFS, who immediately recommended Pay as a skilled sewer who was in need of permanent employment.

“I was happy to get a job in a place like Samatoa,” Pay explains. “It was much better than staying in the village and continuing to work by myself.”

When Pay arrived at Samatoa in February 2004, she was a skilled sewer but had only previously worked with simple cloting and basic fabric. According to Pirum, the workshop manager at Samatoa: “It was obvious that Pay was a good sewer but there was still a lot she had to learn.”

And learn she did, with the help of other staff at Samatoa. In the space of a few months, Pay had switched from handling cheap polyester to working with high-quality silk. As Pay explains: “It was difficult at first because the silk was so thin and require a lot of attention. I had to be very careful not to make any mistakes.”

Nearly two years on from making her first few mistakes, Pay is now an accomplished sewer, competent at sewing and tailoring using the finest cotton and silk. She has even begun learning how to dress make, an indication that, despite her progress, she is still eager to learn more.

Pay expresses her delight at the fair wages, reasonable working hours and safe working conditions she receives at Samatoa. But what she is most pleased about is the way she herself has changed over the past few years.

“I feel more confident now,” she says. “Life is definitely better than it was before.”
